To all the participants, sponsors and fans for Roy’s Cup 2010 we thank you for your generosity. We surpassed $10,000 this year! Our best year ever for fundraising and this was all completed in a very short turn around.
We started construction on Roy’s Coliseum November 15, 2009 and were ready for non-stop action for February 5, 2010. This year brought many special things to mind for us, the Smith Family, and first to mind is the special generosity of our host’s, Anita and Dan Roy. They provided and made everything possible. The hard working brothers Dave, Sylvain and Norm Roy plus Jeff Savage who are the best outdoor ice professionals south of the border.
We recognize these very special volunteers for Roy’s Cup 2010 their dedication and hard work made it possible, Roger Lavoie (Construction Boss), Lea Lacroix (Chef), Ken Roberge (Finder of Items), Steve Smith, Steve Flynn, Bob Petrin (Locksmith), Bob Bechard, Marc Morin, Damon Deschampes (Ice Resurfacing maker), Gary Morrisette, Brent Beyor/Steve Burt (Ice Artists), Ted Nesbaumb (Electrical) and Glen Longval (paint supplier), we the Samantha C. Smith Foundation salute you all. Thank you also, for all those who donated items for the raffle.
As always there are inspiring moments during the tournament and here are some of my favorites. The brave and talented Gabby L’Heureux trumpeted the Canadian National Anthem at the opening ceremonies and brought the house down with applause. The singing of “The Star Spangled Banner” by all of us in attendance was awesome and patriotic. Watching the kids jump out onto the ice between periods to play and skate around. Watching the kids sled down the hill. Making new friends and seeing the smiles on everyone’s faces while taking in a game or warming by the fire. My favorite is the balloon ceremony and “May Samantha’s Spirit Live on in You”. I trust all that attended will have a special memory or two to share with friends and family.
We congratulate our Pink Division Champion “Tradition Energy” and Purple Division Champion “IBEW Local 104” and all our teams that played this year.
For all of you that came to Roy’s Cup 2010 here is my personal challenge to you: 1. spread the word of Samantha’s Foundation and 2. Try and articulate what you witnessed at Roy’s Cup 2010 to your family, friends, and co-workers and get back to me with how you describe this special event.
Kim, Samantha, Blake and I thank you one and all for your support, generosity, friendship and love. Life is short, have fun while you are here and make someone’s life better.
Sincerely,
The Smith Family and Board of Directors
CDJ Winter Classic:
We had a special fundraiser initiated by Camren, Dylan and Jordan King with their 1st annual CDJ Winter Classic the same weekend as Roy’s Cup 2010. After lots of planning, preparation and hard work it is now in the books with a very successful donation of $350 towards Samantha’s Fund. They had a great turnout of 25 participants on a backyard rink located in Portland, ME at the King family home. The King family had some help along the way and two very special benefactors named Krisitin and Mario Giancotti pitched in to lend a hand or two. Matt King was an outstanding defenseman and teammate of mine at the University of Southern Maine and his kids Camren, Dylan and Jordan came up with the idea of hosting a tournament at their rink. We here at the Samantha C. Smith Foundation thank the King family for their generosity and friendship.

As you see in the picture I am surrounded by Camren, Dylan and Jordan King presenting me with a puck and checks for Samantha’s Foundation at the USM alumni game. They say this event is going to grow and we wish Matt all the luck of maintaining a rink for a tournament (this not a dig, we know what it takes to maintain an outdoor surface). May you enjoy many more tournaments in the future and we wish you the best of weather (cold). Matt, is the President of the Helen King Memorial Golf Tournament held in the Portland area every June and the funds raised going to cancer research in the local area. Helen King is Matt’s aunt that has passed away from cancer. We will update you on this fun and charitable event when details become available plus next year’s CDJ Winter Classic.
